Chad Matheny was born in Jacksonville, FL in 1979. He attended American University, where he obtained a B.S. in Physics. He currently lives in New York, where he is studying music at Brooklyn College.

In 1998, shortly before moving to Washington, D.C. for college, he released his first LP as "Emperor X." After hibernating in textbooks and relationships and panicked sci-fi scrawls, he brought that project/pseudonym back in 2004. He has been performing concerts and releasing 7" records, compact discs, and LPs as "Emperor X" ever since. It is his primary focus.

In 2006, he started the Jacksonville Carbon Neutral Initiative in an attempt to pressure Jacksonville's mayor into signing onto the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement, in which the signees promise to hold their municipalities to the federally-snubbed standards established in the Kyoto Protocol. That goal has since been reached and the organization remains active, although under new leadership.

Currently, he is working on an epic multi-volume, multi-label Emperor X album called the Blythe Archives, as well as various text projects and efforts to popularize an ethical argument against reliance on digital recording techniques.
